Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing

For me, words are a form of action, capable of influencing change.
Ingrid Bengis

Listening, speaking, reading and writing are important package of language skills.  Without any part of the package, language will be non-existent. A speaker and a listener are essential for communication.  Reading and writing preserves language and offers another way to communicate and to for others to understand.

In any subject or content area we teach, the four language skills are vital to any instruction.  It is necessary that the language skills are practiced and assessed appropriately according to the needs of the students.

Adieu...

As I close this semester, I reflect on the new ideas that I learned from the course itself, from my peers and most of all from Dr. Rivera.  Through the course, I gained the knowledge of the fundamental practices for evaluating and designing assessment procedures for the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

From my peers, I learned new strategies in teaching and assessing through the collaboration of ideas and teamwork.  Through Dr. Rivera’s example, my knowledge grew in the field of second language learners.

It has been a great and learning semester for me- thank you!

"When you know better you do better.”
Maya Angelou

Culturally responsive classroom and academically effective teachers have the responsibility to ensure that students are prepared to meet today's challenging world of economics, technology and cultural diversity.  As teachers, we need to be aware of the students' cultural heritage and experiences and to be able to integrate these aspects into instruction.
Likewise with teachers and students, when both know better and more, they do better and more.

Teacher through Generations

"When you teach your son, you teach your son's son"
The Talmud

Teachers treat their students as if they are our own. When a teacher teaches, kids learn from each examples written on the board, whatever he/she hears or even sees. That's why we teachers should always serve as a role model to our students for what we teach to our students, may also be what they will teach to the next generation whether may it be their own children or their students should they choose the profession of teaching.

"Good teaching is 1/4 preparation and 3/4's theater"
Gail Godwin

Teaching a specific or particular thought of learning to students requires mastery of the subject. Preparation is just a minimal part of our teaching cause that is where we ready ourselves to like reading our script or planning how to teach the lesson. Our stage is our classroom and our spectators are our students. The classroom is where we teachers show our talents and our mastery of the subject. Just like a character in a stage play who prepared well and delivered a good show in front of his spectators.

"If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it"
Margaret Fuller.

Teachers, Instructors, Professors, whatever we may call ourselves holds knowledge that can light up our students mind from the shadows of ignorance. Imparting thought, teaching disciplines, and sharing experiences to our students is like passing them our light from our torches, enabling them to be better individuals and contributors to our society in the future.

"Who dares to teach must never cease to learn"

As have said, learning is a continuous process. Everyday we tend to learn new things.
Teaching also is dynamic and it is evolving day by day, from prehistoric home based
mother to child teaching down to distance learning today. Teachers should not be
resistant to changes, instead we should adapt to it and share best practices to achieve a
common goal which is to learn and never be ignorant.

Chapter 1 : Assessment Concepts and Issues

The difference between assessment and testing would be that an assessment can tell you if a child understands how they can apply information and a test mainly measures knowledge which is often memorized. Assessment results are often used to help students improve particular aspects of themselves. Tests results are often used for grades or to measure knowledge that was either taught or already memorized.
Assessments can be formal or informal. An example of a formal assessment would be the LAS Links assessment given at the beginning of the year. Informal assessment examples would be writing certain comments on a student paper like ,"Great job!" on student work with no mistakes. At the beginning of each school year our school must give each of our ESL students the LAS Links Assessment. This assessment allows us to find out if an ESL may need services from our program or not. Through the year all of my students must take tests in Reading, Language, Science, Health, PE, and Social Studies. It is from these tests that we measure if there is retention of information taught on.

The dictionary defines testing as : something (as a series of questions or exercises) for measuring the skill, knowledge, intelligence, capacities, or aptitudes of an individual or group.
While assessments is define as An evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something
Testing in my opinion is a collective of skills and knowledge that is put in to questions or exercises. An example of this is the end of the semesters test it has reading, writing counting .Assessments is the ability to complete a certain task very specific like rolling a sushi.

As teachers we plan to teach our students to their full potential by giving them the tools they need to learn. Teachers do this providing the right environment for learning to take place.

The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his pupils that they will answer readily, but how many questions he inspires them to ask him which he finds it hard to answer. -Alice Wellington Rollins

I look forward to a new semester that will better prepare me to give support to second language learners in the classroom.
